Milhilard staff report
Jordan’s tourism industry is buzzing with optimism after Dr. Imad Hijazin was appointed Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in the latest government reshuffle by Prime Minister Dr. Jaafar Hassan.
From hoteliers to heritage activists, voices across the sector say the choice is spot-on. They see Dr. Hijazin — who has worked in Petra, Aqaba, and as Secretary-General of the Ministry — as a seasoned insider who understands both the opportunities and challenges of this crucial industry.
Tourism figures are urging the new minister to unite the sector and position Jordan as a top destination for Christian pilgrimage and domestic tourism alike. They want strategies built in partnership with local communities, investors, and tour operators.
Senator and tourism entrepreneur Michael Nazzal told milhilard.org the ministry must serve the entire industry, not just one segment:
“If we manage the Baptism Site properly, it could be like ‘Jordan’s oil.’ Billions of Christians could be drawn here. Why aren’t we at the level of Hajj and Umrah in Mecca? We need a serious plan, especially for religious tourism.”
Engineer Osama Madanat, Director of the Marriott Hotel, believes Dr. Hijazin’s on-the-ground experience in Petra and Aqaba gives him an edge:
“He knows the sector inside out. I hope he works to unify the industry, engage embassies, and showcase Jordan’s treasures — and its safety — to the world.”
Madanat emphasized the need to enhance facilities, promote Jordan’s Christian heritage, and expand outreach to pilgrimage-rich regions, including Latin America and Africa.
In Madaba, former municipal council member Basma Al-Salaita praised the minister’s track record:
“He works with passion and fairness. We expect him to lift domestic tourism to new heights and treat all governorates equally.”
Her optimism is shared by Dr. Haitham Erefeij, a lawyer and activist, who said Christian tourism has yet to receive the promotion it deserves, despite Jordan’s unmatched spiritual heritage.
Tourism investor Ayman Abdul Karim said the sector’s recovery depends on genuine cooperation between the ministry and private operators: “We need practical solutions to protect jobs, keep companies afloat, and bring tourists back. Smart, targeted campaigns can secure Jordan’s place as a unique and safe destination.”
Dr. Hijazin brings years of leadership experience — from managing UNESCO World Heritage sites in Petra to promoting coastal tourism in Aqaba. As Secretary-General, he launched initiatives that won Umm Qais international recognition as one of the World Tourism Villages of the Year in 2022 and advanced the National Tourism Strategy 2021–2025.
His track record includes championing domestic tourism, building partnerships with the private sector, and creating promotional campaigns to tap into new markets.
Now, with high expectations and strong public support, all eyes are on how he will turn vision into reality — and whether Jordan’s vast tourism potential will finally be fully unlocked.
