The Jordan Evangelical Council issued a statement on October 14, calling for an end to the cycle of violence. The Council endorsed the call by the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem to dedicate October 17th as a day of fasting and prayer for peace and justice. Following is the full text of the statement:
In light of the aggression against the Palestinian people, in the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and the rest of the West Bank, the Jordanian Evangelical Council, in obedience to the call of the Lord Jesus Christ for an end to the bloodshed. Our Lord, in the Sermon on the Mount, called on us to be peacemakers, and therefore we call for an end to the aggression and bloodshed and the need to adopt the language of dialogue and negotiation and to exit the cycle of violence and counter-violence.
Our five churches affiliated with the Jordanian Evangelical Council endorse the speech of His Majesty King Abdullah II at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly and his call for ending the occupation and respecting the sanctity of holy places in Jerusalem. His Majesty said “There are five million Palestinians living under Israeli occupation without civil rights and freedom of movement,” and he also called on the international community to “end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”
Violence begets violence, occupation creates resistance, and siege results in explosion.
Our faith urges the necessity of respecting human rights – every human being – without exception. The Lord of Glory created us in His image, and we must do everything in our power to save blood and protect people, regardless of their race or religion.
Violence begets violence, occupation creates resistance, and siege results in explosion. What we need now more than ever is for those who seek solutions beyond human power, relying on the power of truth and justice.
We all pray to the Lord, who is capable of miracles, to grant us and the peoples of our region, where Jesus Christ lived, peace and security away from wars, killing, settlement, and displacement.
In this regard, we must express our rejection of all those who provide encouragement to the machine of war and aggression.
Our council decided, in its general assembly session, on Saturday, October 14th, 2023, to join the call of the Patriarchs and Heads of churches in Jerusalem to designate next Tuesday as a day of fasting and prayer for peace and justice.
The Jordanian Evangelical Complex of Churches includes five churches:
Evangelical Free Church, Assemblies of God-Jordan Church, Baptist Convention-Jordan, Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, and the Church of Nazarene.
Our God is a God of love, peace, and justice.
We pray for peace, justice, and righteousness as it is stated in the Book of Amos:
“Let justice flow like a river and righteousness like an ever–flowing stream.”
