Fouad Twal, former Patriarch of Jerusalem, in trouble: sued in the US , the Catholic university overwhelmed by debt

At the beginning it was called the university of peace, while instead the university opened by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Madaba, Jordan, in 2011 with the blessing of John Paul II first and then of Benedict XVI (who laid the foundation stone in 2009), it soon proved to be a nightmare, a devastating bottomless pit of money that left a long trail of debt on the ground probably caused by mismanagement and corruption. The inconvenient dossier was kept confidential for a long time but sooner or later it was destined to emerge with force. A few years ago most of the debts (not all) had to be borne by the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher with an extraordinary charity collection to plug the monstrous chasm. Land was also sold in Nazareth to cope with the economic disaster. Money obviously subtracted from other purposes, such as support for the very poor Christian communities brought to their knees by Coved and the crisis.

these days some Palestinian press has reported that former patriarch Fouad Twal, creator of the university of waste and sent home by Pope Francis in 2013, probably due to economic messes will have to appear in an American court. He is being sued by Benjamin Seryani, a Jordanian-American businessman, who is demanding $ 31 million for debts incurred by the University of Madaba (which has its registered office in New Hampshire). Obviously never paid debts. Everything will now have to be rebuilt in court, meanwhile a risky and highly expensive project remains on the ground which, evidently, was carried out without too many checks and verifications also by the Vatican.

Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa – a linear and concrete man – when he was appointed apostolic administrator in place of Twal he immediately realized that the situation was serious. It was necessary to act with determination to solve the maxi mess whose total cost was estimated – by the Arab newspapers – around 100 million dollars. In recent years Pizzaballa has carried out an important work of reorganization of the administration, with adequate internal controls, and the same has been done by the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, in the meantime activated to help him and to raise funds. In some cases, Pizzaballa was also forced to resort to extreme measures such as selling some important properties in Nazareth to deal with creditors. Pizzaballa in a letter from a few years ago noted that the situation would be healed with the help of everyone.

From the papers released by the American court, it seems that the university’s deficit is the result of the loans and management expenses that occurred in the first years of the university’s launch.

Pope John Paul II had donated, during his visit to Jordan in March 2000, the land on which the university was later built and Pope Benedict had contributed 15 million euros for the foundation of the university during his visit to Madaba. in June 2009. But the operating cost of the construction was much higher than the budgeted amounts. Debt began to pile up and forced the university in 2009-2012 to take out mortgages in some Jordanian banks. This loan appears to have been paid off by a loan of 50 million euros in 2015 from a Swiss bank with a guarantee from the Vatican.

The US court case was initiated in 2019. The plaintiff, businessman, Seryani and his company Synergy Select One are seeking $ 31 million in compensation for management fees, expenses, debts to the university and lost contracts for the canteen and transport. Now Monsignor Twal is expected to respond in court.

The Christian Workers’ Movement, chaired by Carlo Costalli at the time, also contributed to the ambitious university project in Jordan wanted by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. To the weekly Vita, in 2013, Costalli explained that he would support the university “with 400 thousand euros in tranches of 50 thousand euros every two months”. The funds came from the 5 per thousand and from a subscription.
